Wednesday (Tour Day)

Tour_Booklet_Rev1.PDF

  • Air Force Academy - Leave your hotel in the morning and visit the Air Force Academy. We’ll spend time at the Visitor Center and enjoy a guided tour (and probably some quick stops) of the campus lookout and the B-52. We will get a tour of the Chapel and view the noon formation (if the freshmen are on campus).

  • U.S. Olympic Training Center - The Olympic Training Center is about a 30-45 min. drive from the AFA, and we will stop for lunch on the way. We’ll have a guided tour of the training facilities. These folks are getting serious for London next summer! BTW lots of great picture opportunities here and at the AFA.

  • Garden of the Gods. Depending on how late you stay at the Olympic Training Center, you could get a look at the Garden of the Gods and take photos of spectacular rock formations and stop at their Visitor Center. It’s just down the road a bit from our dinner place – the famous Flying W Ranch.

  • For a dinner and show, we will be going to the Flying W to enjoy their ranch exhibits and a tasty Chuckwagon Supper, and then the evening entertainment by the famous Flying W Wranglers. This should be a great time for the whole family.

  • There is a Tour_Booklet_REV1.pdf here with detailed driving instructions and more information of the sites we’ll be visiting.

Thursday

  • We will call for papers later in the Spring.

  • Technical sessions will be held at the Rampart Range Campus of Pikes Peak Community College including a hands-on workshop to build a flight beacon.  We’ve got a beacon designed and we flew the prototype on March 12th with good results.  We’ll have more information shortly, but you should start watching the hamfests in your area for a good quality and very light 2m transceiver.  You’ll also need to bring another 2m, DTMF-capable transceiver to program the beacon and to participate in the fox hunt on Friday.

  • Lunch will be catered at the tech session location.

  • The evening meal will be heavy, hot and cold appetizers on the west patio of the nearby Colorado Mountain Brewery.  Fill up on appetizers and enjoy the magnificent view of Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains  The Brewery is across the road and less than half a mile from the Hampton Inn.

  • Late social hour at the host hotel, Hampton Inn.

Friday

  • Technical sessions at the Rampart Range Campus.  There will be student presentations from Colorado Space Grant Consortium folks. At the end of the sessions, we will give a pre-flight briefing for launch site conditions and flight trajectories the following day.

  • Fox hunt to track your new flight beacons.  If you have a 2m Yagi, please bring it.

  • Lunch will be catered at the tech session location

  • Evening meal TBD

  • Late social hour at the host hotel, Hampton Inn

Saturday

  • All teams:  launch and recovery

  • EOSS will launch two 3K gram balloons for Colorado Space Grant Consortium

  • A “How Did It Go?” session will be hosted post-conference in a WebEx session during the following week hopefully augmented with write-ups on this site.  This will give attendees a chance to start home Saturday afternoon
